Lake Chapala is Mexico’s largest freshwater lake, about 45 minutes to an hour from Guadalajara airport, with Ajijic on its north shore at roughly 1,500 meters. The climate is mild year-round, the dry season runs from about October or November to May, and the rains arrive in June. That makes October through May the safest window for an outdoor wedding.
What makes Chapala different
Lake Chapala is the largest freshwater lake in Mexico, about 80 km long and 18 km wide, with a surface at roughly 1,524 meters above sea level. It lies south of Guadalajara in Jalisco and extends into Michoacán. Towns such as Chapala, Ajijic and Jocotepec line its shore, and the altitude keeps nights cool even in spring.
For a wedding, the appeal is a destination feel within easy reach of a major airport, with long views, gardens and a village atmosphere that the city does not have.
Weather by season
The climate is a mild, temperate highland one. The coldest months are December and January, with highs around 25 °C (77 °F) and lows around 7 °C (44 °F); the hottest is May, with an average high near 32 °C (90 °F). The dry season runs from roughly October or November to May, and the rains arrive between June and October.
| Season | Typical weather | Wedding planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Nov–Jan | Dry, sunny days, cool nights (lows near 7 °C). | Bring wraps or heaters for outdoor dinners. |
| Feb–May | Dry and warm, with May the hottest month. | Schedule outdoor events after 4 pm in May. |
| Jun–Oct | Rainy season, often afternoon storms. | Have a covered plan B; read the rain backup plan. |
Getting there and getting around
Fly into Guadalajara (GDL) and drive roughly 45 minutes to an hour to Chapala or Ajijic. Local guides quote 30 to 47 minutes depending on traffic and the town. For a wedding group, a private van booked in advance is easier than taxis or rental cars; the whole picture is in the Guadalajara airport guide.
- Where guests stay: hotels and rentals in Chapala, Ajijic and Jocotepec; book a block early.
- Local transfers: a van between the lodging and the venue, in both directions after the reception.
- The village feel: cobblestone streets in Ajijic make flat shoes a sensible suggestion on the invitation.
The types of venue around the lake
There are four main kinds of venue: lakefront gardens, haciendas and estates, private villas and boutique hotels. Each has a different capacity, catering model and outside-vendor policy. Ask for the guest limit, noise curfew and alternative indoor space for every venue on your shortlist.
| Venue type | Good for | Ask about |
|---|---|---|
| Lakefront garden | Ceremonies with water views, 50–150 guests. | Covered backup, restrooms, sound limits. |
| Hacienda or estate | Larger weddings with on-site lodging. | Exclusivity and vendor rules. |
| Private villa | Intimate weddings and elopements. | Capacity, parking, neighbors. |
| Boutique hotel | Guests staying on site. | Outside-vendor fee, see outside vendor fees. |
Photography notes for lakeside weddings
The lake gives long views and soft light, but the same wide sky means very bright midday conditions and quick changes in the rainy season. Plan portraits for the hour before sunset, and check the sunset times by month to set the ceremony start. A first look in the morning solves most light problems.
If you plan to elope near the lake, the same principles apply on a smaller scale; see eloping in Guadalajara.
Chapala compared with Guadalajara and Tequila
Chapala is the quietest of the three Jalisco options: a lakeside village setting 45 to 60 minutes from the airport. Guadalajara offers the most venues and the shortest transfers, and Tequila offers agave landscapes about 80 km and an hour and twenty minutes from the airport. Pick Chapala for water views and a relaxed pace, Guadalajara for variety, and Tequila for the agave setting.
| Option | From GDL airport | Setting | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Chapala / Ajijic | About 45–60 min | Lake, gardens, village streets | Water views and a relaxed pace. |
| Guadalajara | Inside the metro area | City, haciendas, historic center | The most venues and the shortest transfers. |
| Tequila | About 80 km, roughly 1 h 20 | Agave fields, distilleries | A regional, atmospheric setting. |
