An Engagement or Day-After Session in Guadalajara and Tequila

For a destination wedding in Jalisco, the easiest portrait session is the one on your trip: a day-after session once the wedding is over, or a pre-wedding session when you arrive early. An engagement session at home is best when you want practice and save-the-date photos. Book it 3 to 6 months out, and at least two months before save-the-dates go to print.

Three session options compared

There are three real options: an engagement session at home, a pre-wedding session after you arrive in Jalisco, and a day-after session the morning after the wedding. They solve different problems: practice and save-the-dates, time with the photographer before the chaos, or relaxed portraits in your wedding outfits with no timeline pressure.

When to book each one

Book an engagement session 3 to 6 months before the wedding so there is time to order prints and products. If you want the photos on your save-the-dates, shoot at least two months before the cards go out; destination couples usually send them 8 to 12 months before the wedding. A day-after session should be booked with the wedding package, so the morning is held for you.

The send-out timeline for the cards is in the 12-month destination wedding timeline.

Where to shoot in Guadalajara and Tequila

The three most distinct backdrops in Jalisco are Guadalajara’s historic center, the agave fields around Tequila, and the lakefront at Chapala and Ajijic. Each one photographs differently, so choose by feeling rather than by feature list. The day-after session is also a good moment to visit a place that does not fit into the wedding schedule.

What to wear and bring

Dress for the location and for movement: layers, flat soles for cobblestones and agave fields, and one outfit that photographs well in warm light. Solid, muted colors tend to look better than small patterns or logos. If it is a day-after session, bring the wedding dress and suit in a garment bag and a small kit for touch-ups, as discussed in how to fly with a wedding dress to Mexico.

  1. Two outfits at most; more eats into the light.
  2. Comfortable shoes for walking between locations.
  3. Water, a hat and sunscreen for midday walking.
  4. Something with meaning: a family jacket, a letter or a song for the couple.

Permits, light and logistics

Early morning and the hour before sunset give the best light, and midday is the hardest to photograph in. Some public locations and many private venues, including haciendas and distilleries, require permission for professional shoots, which is an item to confirm with your photographer. Sunset times by month are in the Guadalajara sunset guide.

How to pick the right one

Choose the day-after session if you want portraits in your wedding outfits without a timeline. Choose the engagement session at home if you want save-the-date photos and a chance to practice. Choose a pre-wedding session if you arrive early and want to meet the person who will photograph your wedding. If you can only do one, most destination couples find the day-after the best value, because the travel is already paid for.

Where are the best places for portraits in Guadalajara and Tequila?

Guadalajara’s historic center is best early in the morning, the agave fields of Tequila near sunset, and the lakefront gardens at Chapala and Ajijic in the late afternoon.

Some public locations and most private venues, such as haciendas and distilleries, ask for permission for professional sessions. Your photographer should confirm this for each location before the session.
